The College is saddened to announce the death of Emeritus Fellow Dr Jon Whiteley.

Dr Whiteley was a distinguished art historian who enjoyed a long career as Assistant Keeper in the Department of Western Art at the Ashmolean Museum, where he was mainly responsible for French drawings, part of the collection of North European paintings, and musical instruments.

During his time there, he catalogued the museum's French drawings, and was the author of numerous books on the collections. His catalogue of the Ashmolean's French paintings after 1800 will be published next year. He was made a chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2009.

You can see some of Jon's work in the 'Apples, Pears and Paint' BBC documentary.

The Director of the Ashmolean, Dr Xa Sturgis, has written a moving reflection about Jon, which is available on the Ashmolean's website: https://www.ashmolean.org/.
