Steve Strand joins LBC to discuss effects of socio-economic inequalities on special education

St Cross Fellow Professor Steve Strand was recently interviewed by LBC's Eddie Mair, who has been hosting a series of discussions on the over-representation of many ethnic minority pupils with special education needs. Steve, who is part of a team that conducted a long-term a study of the educational outcomes of 500,000 primary school children, noted that the social, emotional, and mental health needs of many ethnic minority students were often not being met. His team's findings reported that the largest drivers of these inequalities were socio-economic. 'The biggest driver here is... structural inequalities,' Steve reported, 'particularly around wealth and privelege.'
