St Cross College is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Matt Jarvis as the new Vice-Master, succeeding Professor Kevin Marsh, who has held the role since January 2021.

Professor Jarvis, a distinguished astrophysicist, has been a Fellow of St Cross College since 2012. He completed his undergraduate degree in Physics with Astrophysics at the University of Birmingham, before undertaking a DPhil in Astrophysics at the University of Oxford. His academic career has included roles at the University of Leiden, the University of Hertfordshire, and Oxford’s Department of Physics, where he served as Associate Head of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division (MPLS) for People until December 2024.

Speaking about his new role, Professor Jarvis said:

I’m really looking forward to taking up the position of Vice-Master as I, and I know many other Fellows that I have spoken to, feel like there is a lot of potential for defining what a graduate college looks and feels like in the 21st century. I hope that I can help Kate and all of our staff at the College to realise our ambitions. I can’t wait to get started!

When not working, you can usually find Professor Jarvis playing or watching sport with his dog, Freddie.

The College extends its gratitude to Professor Kevin Marsh for his dedicated service as Vice-Master over his four years and looks forward to working with Professor Jarvis in his new role from Trinity Term.
