St Cross Fellow Dr Liz Frood, Associate Professor of Egyptology, starred in a photoshoot in College earlier this month showcasing inclusive fashion by Kintsugi Clothing.
The company takes its name from kintsugi, the Japanese practice of repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer, and designs clothing that is intended to be as inclusive as possible. Particular consideration is made to fastenings, ensuring they are easy to use, as well as the appearance of the clothes when the wearer is seated.
Liz lost her legs below the knee to sepsis in 2015, as well as most of the use of her hands. In 2018 she travelled back to Egypt for the first time to continue her work, an experience that was filmed by the BBC. Speaking to Emma McClelland, Kintsugi's founder, Liz says: "I used to love clothes, but after my illness they became nothing but a struggle and another area of grudging compromise. Discovering a company which is designing lovely clothes with bodies like mine in mind makes me so happy."
